Eckerd College Amnesty International Club is a student group representing the largest grassroots human rights
organization in the world, Amnesty International, which has also won the
Nobel Peace Prize. EC Amnesty International focuses on activism and raising awareness about grave abuses of human
rights. Their campaigns include, but are not limited to, ending torture
and the death penalty, protecting individuals at risk, and speaking out
in defense of freedom of speech, religion, and gender equality. Every December they host a
write-a-thon which falls during human rights awareness week, where they write pre-made letters directly to oppressive government regimes on
behalf of prisoners of conscience.
This semester EC Amnesty International is planning to have Juan Melendez come to campus on October 8 at 7p.m
in Fox Hall. Mr. Melendez is an internationally-recognized speaker on
human rights issues, as he spent nearly 18 years on Florida's death row
for a crime he did not commit.
